Translation of the salutation type in email templates

Hi,
I've just installed VTE 4.4.1 (I'm planning to migrate from the old vTiger 5.1.0) and I'm using the italian translation for every user (I've not found a global language setting).
In italian, "Mr." is "Sig.".
I do in fact see "Sig." when viewing/creating a contact.
But if I insert $Contacts||salutationtype$ into a mail template, it will always put "Mr." and not "Sig."
How can I solve this?

Update: I also changed, in config.inc.php and config.template.php :

$default_language = 'en_us';

to

$default_language = 'it_it';

without success.
